Carers Week 9th – 15th June 2025
National Carers Week 2025 will take place from June 9th. This annual campaign aims to raise awareness of the vital role of unpaid carers, shed light on the challenges they face, and celebrate the invaluable contributions they make to families and communities across the UK. It also provides an opportunity for individuals who may not see themselves as carers to connect with the support they need.
Carers often face unique challenges when it comes to their own health and wellbeing, particularly around sleep which we at the Lincolnshire Sleep Hub recognise. Many carers are responsible for looking after loved ones with various needs, including those who are elderly, have disabilities, or have neurodiverse conditions. This responsibility can be physically and emotionally demanding, often leaving carers with little time or energy to care for themselves—especially their sleep.
Supporting carers with sleep is important
Good sleep is essential for everyone, but for carers, it’s especially important. When you’re caring for someone else, your ability to stay healthy, energised, and focused depends on how well you take care of yourself — and that includes your sleep. Poor sleep can lead to burnout, increased stress, and reduced cognitive function, all of which can make caregiving even harder.
By prioritising your sleep, you’re not just helping yourself — you’re also improving your ability to care for your loved one. When you’re well-rested, you’ll feel more alert, patient, and compassionate. You’ll also reduce the risk of physical injuries and illnesses that can be exacerbated by fatigue.
Physical & Emotional Exhaustion: The exhaustion from caregiving can negatively impact a carers ability to fall asleep or stay asleep, leading to a cycle of poor sleep that can further impair their physical and mental health.
Mental Health: Poor sleep is closely linked to mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and burnout.
Improved Care for Loved Ones: When carers are well-rested, they are better able to provide care for their loved ones. Restful sleep can improve their mood, energy levels, and patience, which are all crucial for providing high-quality care.
Long-Term Health: Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to long-term health problems, such as heart disease, weakened immune function, and cognitive decline. By supporting carers in getting better sleep, we help prevent these potential long-term health issues.
Quality of Life: Adequate sleep improves overall quality of life. It enhances concentration, decision-making, and emotional regulation—skills that are essential for carers when managing both their own lives and the lives of those they care for.
What are we doing to support carers
At the Lincolnshire Sleep Hub, we recognise how critical it is to support carers in achieving better sleep. Our mission is to ensure that carers not only have the tools to improve their sleep and that of their loved ones, but also have a space where they can connect, share experiences, and access the resources they need to maintain their own wellbeing.
